Zero Depth Vaginoplasty Genital Reconstruction

The main characteristic of this feminisation surgery is that an external vulva is created with all its anatomical components (labia majora and minora, interlabial mucosa, clitoris, clitoral cover, urethral meatus and entrance to the vaginal canal), and the construction of the vaginal canal is omitted, only a small aesthetic orifice is created. As there is no vagina, vaginal intercourse is not possible. In zero depth vaginoplasty, the aesthetic result of the vulva can be improved as part of the tissue that would be used to create the vaginal depth in a simple vaginoplasty is used to create the lips of the vulva.

Genital Reconstruction Surgeries

The decision to perform a zero depth vaginoplasty is made by the patient once her doctor or surgeon has informed her extensively about this type of surgery. If in the future the patient would like to have vaginal depth, she will have to resort to a new, longer and more complex procedure such as a colovaginoplasty, so this decision must be carefully considered before being taken.

Zero Depth Vaginoplasty

What does zero-depth vaginoplasty consist of?

This surgery consists of making the necessary anatomical changes to convert a genital area of male morphology into a vulva of female morphology, with a small vaginal entrance of one centimetre deep but without a vagina, avoiding the risks that a deep vagina entails and the annoying dilatations of the first year. To create this vulva and provided that there has been no previous circumcision, the skin of the foreskin of the penis will be used, which will be anchored to the crown of the penis to make the labia minora and improve its aesthetics.

The zero depth vaginoplasty technique is a genital surgery with the absence of a vagina, only a small aesthetic hole of 1 cm deep. Vaginal intercourse is not possible due to the absence of the vagina.

The only consequence is that if in the future the patient wants a vagina, she will have to undergo a colovaginoplasty, which is a slightly longer and more complex surgery than a simple vaginoplasty. The reason is that as part of the tissue has been used to make the lips of the vulva, it would not be possible to make a neo-vagina with a simple vaginoplasty surgery.

As this surgery does not involve the creation of a vaginal canal, long-term dilatation is avoided and other organs such as the rectum and prostate are not involved during the surgery, thus avoiding possible complications.

For example, if the surgery is scheduled for a Monday morning, the patient will be able to go home on Wednesday without any problem.

As it is a simpler surgery, surgical times are shorter, therefore the cost is lower and hospitalisation and post-operative visits are also shorter.
